Report of first presentation [in]visible-project

About 60 people knew to find the metal stairs at Archief Synergie Saturday 16th of May because of first presentation of project [in]visible. Food enough for reflection.

In the smallest and most hidden corner of the archives Jeroen van Westen showed a precious bookwork on a heavy granite table-leaf. Valuable, because the book is unique and is containing pictures of goosefeathers that had been worked up on vellums carefully placed in a book with a wooden cover. The book was made 15 years ago. At first the goosefeathers seem to be stuck, on closer examination one can notice that they are painted. Minute and with lots of love, as meant for his wife and children. In total Jeroen has worked for two years on it. This is the first presentation in public. For him a geese means something mythical, this work made full of love is in honour of the dedication and passion that scientific search includes. Those who turn on the pages don’t know that there is a camera pointed on her/him, connected with a computer. The pictures can be looked at individually, thanks to the spectator of the original book: a matter of seeing and be watched. In this way Jeroen van Westen is giving a serious solution to a greater audience to experience the bookwork. Probably a solution that could be used at several other bookpresentations. Besides, a counter connected to the computer could point out how many people have visited the site and thus had a look at the book, at what time, etc.


Rob Erdmann en Goletta Jansen were using the bigger tables to spread out their interactive books: 3 different copies, placed in a uniform way on black cloth underlayers. Accompanied by a manual. The plan was to create a permanent changing object, on which occasion through interference of the audience a new bookwork could be made that never would become complete. During the process of the making Rob and Goletta got surprised by themselves. It wasn’t the single book that saw daylight, finally it became 3. It became a complementary work. Those who know their works better could figure out about how this influence worked. One of the books is existing of a designers-catalogue that got cut. Parts of the pictures now can be replaced and removed in the remnants of the original book. There is a comparison with some kind of a comb. A bookbrush, as to say. Looking at another book arbitrary letters have been replaced by black stitches, creating apparently chaos. Esthetical in form, though shaped by coincidence and because of interfering by others never ending in a similar view.


A few years ago Ton Martens made a journey to Japan. The translation in pictures of this diary he put into rubbings, photographs and notes. The bookwork he created afterwards because of this trip and the belonging correspondance has been given a new shape: all separate sheets got tacked at a 17,5 millimeters distance on a wooden frame. It is possible to read the whole contents of the installation in a arbitrary sequence by rolling aside with an office-chair. It is remarkable that the whole bunch of papers is moving into one consequent direction because of gravity and weight of the paper itself. Graphic designer Titus Swart was happily surprised when he noticed the stamp he designed a few years ago stuck on a postcard. For him it was the first time that he saw “his” stamp in use. Ton’s installation is accompanied by a rubbing piece captured in a glass frame (“please do not touch”) in combination with changing pictures out of this project on 3 digital photoframes. Those who wanted to have something physical out of this presentation were able to take a numbered booklet with them, according to the “printing-on-demand”-method (thanks to Canon Europe nv).
